Air bite

Hi all,

My 2 month female is starting to jump and bite the air in the direction a person.

For example say I was sitting in front of her and petting her she will randomly start jumping and biting the air towards me. If shes laying down, she will pull her head back then bite the air while extending her head forward. And she will keep doing it until I leave her alone.

This behavior is becoming a more and more common thing that she does.

What does it mean? Should I be worried?

It's a part of early dominance which in a litter pack if they stay with mum they learn to socialise.

What you do is clip on a lead, lead her out of the room, put her in another quiet room alone for five minutes.

They learn fast.. and after a few repetitions she should stop this.. don't speak or chastise. When she comes in and sniffs politely, praise her with 'yes! be nice' and reward.

Successdogs.com and absolutedogs.com for training....asap.  🤗

My two did that at first. The female still does when she is really worked up.

I agree with Maz51. Ignoring them when they do that and only praising when she does a behavior you like.

My male started that and then it progressed into a feeding time issue. He jumps and air bits. Gets me on the butt sometimes. Then when he thinks you have a treat, he snaps at your hands. I told him no, turned my back to him, gave him a command to set or go lay down. Once he holds the command I would pat him on the head. Didn't say anything to him or make the reward a dig deal. But he caught on quickly. Still does it once in awhile with the kids (teenagers). They think it is funny because they are small and because they laugh when the pups do it, the pups think it is ok with them.

Don't react to negative behavior. They want attention wether positive or negative. So ignoring them works best. It is a natural punishment for them. At least that is how my pups are and works with them.

I am concerned though about the touching thing. "She will do it until left alone". This may train her to keep doing it when she wants to be left alone.?.?

My female pup is not lovey dovy. When she gets snappy with us while setting calmly petting her, I have pulled her up on my lap and just held her. She calms right down and stops snapping. I didn't want her to learn that that was the correct way to stop the attention. However, if she backs away or gets up without snapping, I allow her to move away. It seems to be working.

But one thing for sure is training.
