Introducing myself and Kai!

Recommended Posts

Hello! My name is Jessie! This is not my first time owning a husky but this is my first time raising one from tiny puppy to adult. I got Kai February 25th and his birthday is December 30th! So he’s a little over 4 months old! He didn’t come from a very good place. The breeders kept all the puppies outside by themselves after he weaned them too early. He fed them adult dog food until they were adopted. All of the puppies were pretty sick and they had to sleep on orange sand, injesting it often. I sadly only got the one (the rest were adopted by my family members though!) When we left with the rest of the puppies we called the police and told him of the terrible acts the man was doing. (Apparently he had warrants for animal abuse and more but that’s a different story.) Anyway! So when I started to “tame” the puppies he was the only one who wouldn’t let anyone near him. He’s been around my pet/s ferrets, turtles, horses, cows, pigs, cats, chickens, birds, raccoons, dogs, fish, rats, snakes, and even my fox. He loves everything but new people.  After a few months of good health and shots and deworming, and socializing he’s only about 70% there with me and about 45% there with other people and strangers. I love him so much and he makes me and my other animals so happy! So, have any of you rescued huskies that weren’t treated right? I know they’re stubborn, so were you able to “fix them”? I’m gonna attach a bunch of old and new pictures!

Welcome to the forum.    I am Marley's fourth owner  -  and he was only 12 weeks old!   I've not had your problems, but mainly those associated with being taken away from mum too early.    However  I noticed very early on that whenever I picked up a stick in the garden and held it - Marley would stay away from me,   -  yesterday I mentioned it to hubby when we were both in the garden enjoying the sunshine and Marley and Lunar were having a mad 10 mins and getting very very noisy  - I went and got the yard brush  (I was around 15ft-20ft  from the dogs)  Marley immediately stopped playing with Lunar went and stood behind hubby's chair cowering whilst Lunar came over to see what I was doing  -  Lunar is 13 yrs old and Marley is now 2 1/2.

Just to be clear - I have never hit my dog - nor threatened him with being hit  - but something made him very frightened of sticks & yard brushes.   It's not just me, anyone carrying anything resembling a stick makes him run and cower.     From when we first got him right up to today  if he thinks he is in trouble for anything he immediately goes flat on his back in the submissive pose  -   we thought it cute and funny when he was a puppy  -  but as he continues with this behaviour I wonder what caused it in the first place.

Time and patience  -  and lots of love, cuddles and play  -  with more time and patience thrown in.  You will get there  (as I will)

Neither Ice nor Bear had the best start to life.

Bear feared vehicles, confinement and had separation anxiety. She didn’t fear people but was extremely confused as to what they were and what purpose they served. You tried to stroke her and she would look at you in confusion.

Ice on the other hand was very fearful and mistrusting of people and yes anyone holding an object in their hand like a walking stick or tube of wrapping paper would make him cower too. It has taken him a long time to come around, much longer than Bear, although his early experiences were not the same as Bear’s so you can’t really compare. (Ice had bad experiences of people whereas Bear simply had zero experience of people).

Now he is very excited to see new people and other dogs but if he doesn’t know you and you try to put your arms around him, he will growl a little and back away from you until he’s more familiar. He’s still got a small amount of mistrust even now. (He’ll be 7 years old in September).

But he’s a totally different dog to the angry, fearful pup we brought home. They’re both confident and happy adults. [emoji3]
