Ace12
What are your opinions on shaving your Husky? Some are for and some are against it. What about you?
robke
Just do not do it unless for medical reasons... the double coat keeps them warm in the winter and cool in the summer...
Jo
As Rob said, and the guard hairs are waterproof Sent from my iPhone using Husky Owners
BingBlaze n Skyla
I dread to think who is for it !? Never never never shave a husky Sent from my [device_name] using http://Husky Owners mobile app
Emma
Shaving a husky is not for the dogs benefit. Some people wrongly believe that shaving them in hotter climates keeps them Cooler but it’s not actually the case. As mentioned their double coat acts in a similar way to double glazed windows. It keeps the cold out and also the heat. Additionally they stand a real risk of sunburn being shaved. Sometimes it’s necessary for medical reasons like if they’re being spayed but otherwise it’s a definite no no. petertmartin
Quite a lot of people ask me if we ever get Harlow cut and then I have to explain the whole double coat situation and you shouldn't ever shave a double coated dogSent from my [device_name] using http://Husky Owners mobile app
BingBlaze n Skyla
You really don't need to shave , a good brush is all you need this was done over a few weeks with a undercoat rake Sent from my [device_name] using http://Husky Owners mobile app
wolfpup
I've heard of huskies dying with heat stroke after being shaved - their coat is both their heating and cooling system. imho it amounts to abuse (through ignorance - not intentional). If you are worried about the heat - take your dog out earlier in the day or in the evening - but please do not shave.
Jay
I think you probably know now that you should not shave a husky. Their undercoat protects them from the elements, which include heat too. But it's great that you asked first! Welcome
Ace12
Yeah, I know husky's are not supposed to be shaved and that their double coat protects them. It's just that I hear from people around talking how husky's should be shaved cause they are gonna be extremly hot under their coat in the summer. I'm not going to shave mine, just to clarify that! Thanks for all the response tho D:
Apollo The Siberian Husky
My vet told me to really consider shaving my siberian husky apollo. Last summer when we first adopted him he was extremely hot and always panting and sleep all day. She says that it would really be good for him are you sure you shouldn't shave. Yes we are sure do NOT shave. Brush every day make sure there is shade and fresh water for your pup but for goodness sake don’t shave a double coated dog..your vet needs to go back to school or find something else to do for work... double coated dogs you only shave in a medical emergency for an operation.... 2Huskyfun
Please do not shave. It is horrible for them. I would get a new vet. The vet obviously does not know Huskies. Mine have a kiddy pool. I fell it half water half ice. I put it in a shady spot. They love it and are entertained for a long while.
BingBlaze n Skyla
Find a new vet , one that understands double coated dogs , they shed out their own undercoat to cool down and the guard hairs help protect their sensitive skin from harmful uv rays from the sun
chelseafan
Not all vets know about husky’s needs, they’re not a regular dog so advice given, even from a professional isn’t always correct, we assume it is because they’re supposed to know answers to our questions.Sent from my iPhone using Husky Owners
