Have to rant at someone

Another reason why dogs should be kept on a lead. A farmer by me has lost sheep and a lamb has had its face bitten because of 2 loose Jack Russell's. I think this might be the farm behind my house. I watched a couple walk through the field the other week when the cows were in it, they were walking a Staffie who was not on the lead! Cows don't like dogs at the best of times. Luckily the dog seemed to be sticking by it's owners side, but the cows were running over pretty quickly and the male owner seemed to thinking making a 'boo' motion at the cows would make them go away [emoji849] some people have no clue

My dog is always spooked easily so my issue is the people who come up on you close as they can while your dog is squatted. Then their dog starts barking and rushing a dog in their most insecure states and she freaks out trying to rip my arm off to get away.

I have no problem calling people out for being an ass nowadays. I'm not walking my dog to make friends so I really could care less what others think of me for calling a spade a spade. Everyone's so sensitive, you're gonna upset a few along the way.

100 % agree with the fact that there's less places for our fur kids to go to, there's been a surge in the last few years in my town with people buying the 'designer' dogs and with that there are signs going up in places dogs have always gone to saying NO DOGS ALLOWED! I personally think some of it is to do with the fact that some dog owners won't pick up their dog poop, I think councils should employ dog wardens to actively dish out on the spot fines to these people, it's the only way to move forward.

Don't even get me started on that.... firstly why get a dog if you are going to not pick up poo, secondly why plaster my pavements around my house with graffiti saying you will fine people when you NEVER try and catch them and there is poo all over them. They could make a fortune.

Theres a couple near me who walk the tinyist dog I've ever seen, I saw them walk away without picking up its poo, I questioned them and offered a poo bag in case they'd run out, the guy just said that his dogs poo was so small he didnt need to pick up, this is on a path that lots of people use, needless to say, I picked it up and they have never said hello since!!!

Coming back to this thread, last night we were out walking the dogs and this woman had a little spaniel type dog walking off lead on the pavement. She saw us and called it back the other way so I was watching her as I walked down the road. My god, I was stunned! He was wandering in and out of gardens with her calling it in vain, then he went round the corner with her yelling "No! Tosca! (Not sure what she was yelling but it sounded like tosca without the c [emoji12])". "Wrong way tosca!" No lead in her hand and unfortunately not wearing enough clothing to conceal one either. Off she vanished and I turned to hubby in shock and he just looked as horrified as me. What the actual heck did we just see?! Craziness [emoji21]

I'm sure some dog owners think that because their dog might be obedient at home that they'll act the same way in other situations or places no forward thinking or planning whatsoever. So frustrating!

Agreed. In fact I think some owners just don't think full stop or don't have any common sense.
A couple weeks back there was a post on my local Facebook page and I'll give you a brief run down of it...,,
"I was enjoying a walk with my dog in the woods until I saw some horrible people with their dog on a lead. I'm not s bad owner and don't want my dog to be vicious by not mixing so I let my dog run over to it and these horrible people were shouting at me and their vicious dog was growling at mine. Perhaps it wouldn't be so vicious if you let it off the lead and mix with other dogs properly. I ain't done nuffink wrong, just coz you're posh you think you own the world but you don't . Dog owners like you make me sick, you ruined my day". Etc.......just about sums it up really. Yes there is an importance to socialise but Jesus Christ! do it sensibly and safely, silly woman didn't have a clue she was actually the one in the wrong at all......she did get hammered in the comments section though. I summoned up the courage to go back to the park the other day, que off lead terrier [emoji849] the owner clearly saw me grab the police leads on my 2 and she started to let her dog run towards mine. She shouted 'oh she's ok she might just mither them a bit' (!) I just shouted back, well mine aren't ok! She grabbed her dog then, but people just don't have a clue! Yeah you just let your dog run over to mine to 'mither' them that's fine love!

No joke! I had it this morning, a group of women walking their dogs off lead whilst having a good natter, one beagle came running up to us, Amy was bouncing around, I called to ask them to call the dog back - she did but it didnt listen, she made no effort to come get it, altho Amy is super friendly the dogs owner didnt know that, now, if anything bad had happened, who would she be blaming???? I'm now fed up of saying to the SAME off lead dog owners that Luka's not that friendly, I think it's fear aggression, he's quite nervous. I'm working hard with Luka to calm him down and praise him lots when he walks by without growling where there's off lead dogs around, can't really blame the dogs as there just being dogs it's the owners that need educating.

I actually dread to think what would happen if this happened to me , for the most part skyla stays calm but I've seen her completely change before , this offlead dog charged us and her face literally morphed from sweet husky to savage wolf , I've not seen her do it since but I think if she felt threatened enough she could do some damage if given the chance , the attack that happened to her has made her VERY fearful of offlead dogs and dogs that bark at her :( not her fault at all which makes it all the worse

Here's how the law stands on the subject.

What laws should I be aware of when walking my dog?

Dog owners and the law

If you are a dog owner, or dog walker, there are a number of laws you should be aware of. We highlight the most important legal issues for dog owners and walkers.

Environmental matters

Local authorities, parish councils and similar authorities have powers where a dog is not under sufficient control in a public place, or its faeces have not been collected. Under the Clean Neighbourhoods and Environment Act 2005, local authorities, etc. have the power to make Dog Control Orders in relation to public land.

A Dog Control Order may relate to the fouling of land by dogs and the removal of dog faeces; the keeping of dogs on leads; the exclusion of dogs from land and the number of dogs which a person may take on to any land. Failure to comply with a Dog Control Order is a criminal offence punishable by a maximum fine at Level 3 (£1000).

An authority can issue a fixed penalty notice in place of prosecution. It is an offence, punishable by a fine, not to supply your name or address, or to give a false or inaccurate name or address to a person authorised under the 2005 Act to issue a fixed penalty notice.

Leads, collars and muzzles

Under the Road Traffic Act 1988 it is a criminal offence for a dog to be on a designated road (ie. a public road) without being held on a lead. There are exceptions for dogs proved to be kept for driving or tending sheep or cattle in the course of a trade or business; and dogs proved to have been at the material time in use under proper control for sporting purposes.

The Control of Dogs Order 1992 requires every dog (subject to a few exceptions) while on a public highway or in a public place to wear a collar with the name and address of the owner inscribed on it or a plate or badge attached to it. The exceptions include:

  • packs of hounds;
  • dogs used for sporting purposes;
  • dogs being used for the capture or destruction of vermin;
  • dogs being used for the driving or tending of cattle or sheep;
  • dogs being used on official duties by a member of the Armed Forces or Customs and Excise or a police force;
  • dogs being used in emergency rescue work, and;
  • dogs registered with the Guide Dogs for the Blind Association.

If you do not comply with the legal requirements for a collar, you can be prosecuted and fined under the Animal Health Act 1981. Furthermore, if your dog does not have a collar on a highway or in a public place, it can be treated as a stray dog and seized by the Local Authority.

OK. You lot have now convinced me 100%.

A couple of days ago me and Mowgli got ambushed by two working spaniels. We always try to avoid them as them have had a meeting before. These two ran through a gate with the owner around 10m behind and ran flat out towards us barking aggressively and then one of them went straight for Mowglis neck. Mowgli is pretty good at turning and shoulder barging but it kept coming so I got in the way. The owner was shouting at these dogs to come back but they didn't recall at all. After them Corning us he finally got them on the leads and all was good. He did apologise and said they have never done that before and always recall. [emoji31] these were well trained working dogs! So this proves offlead walking to wrong and dangerous. To top it off, two minutes later into the walk it happened again with another dog and the owner said "My dog has never done that before" and then went on to say "it's probably because he is on a lead" I bit my tongue and enjoyed the rest of my walk.

I can control Mowgli well when other dogs coming running at us and have only let him retaliate once as I felt threatened. That spaniel went away with a punctured cheek and nose.

I think I met the stupidest dog owner on the planet this morning.
We're on our way home from our morning walk through the park and this cocker whatever it is, cross breed, is running towards us, owner shouting to it to come back, dog completely ignored him, Luka does a 360 and Cai is pulled down on the ground, I twist my wrist, dog trying to get to Luka from behind, dog owner still shouting and dog still ignoring. I manage to get out of the park and wait by the wall to let them squirrel watch, THEN stupid dog owner walks past us with his dog on a retractable dog lead and let's his dog approach us again saying 'say hello then' I asked him to move his dog away. 15 mins later he did the same thing outside the butchers, Luka was going nuts, even Cai growled, i haven't a clue what he was trying to achieve.
