Potty training

you can get puupy pee pads, put them on the floor and when he goes put him on the pad.

He'll soon get the idea that he must go on the pad.

THEN you start moving the pad a little at a time to the area where it is ok for him to go potty.

It's a slow process over several weeks or even months depending on the dogs willingness to take on new ideas.

as always treats and praising for positive reinforcement.

If you're toilet training them to go outside then take them out regularly (you go with them) and particularly after sleeping, eating, drinking, and playing. Lots of ott praise if they actually do something out there. They do pick it up fairly quickly but you do get the occasional accident where they get distracted and are suddenly 'caught short' and whoops! Puddle on the floor lol.

Mine also 8 weeks old. He pe and po everywhere. I already put him to the pad everytime he want to pe or poo, sometimes I missed the time he finish his bussiness. Been doing this for weeks but no result, so I put him outside, on my garage. I also chained him so he will not destroy everything. Is that a good idea? I don't know what to do anymore.. and I think about it every day, is that okay to keep him on the chain everyday? Since I have 19m baby in the house so I cannot let my baby step on pe or po >.

I can understand you not wanting your little one treading in a load of poop.

But you do need to be around him to teach him what to do. If you're taking him out regularly and then praising him when he goes to the toilet then that's the way he will learn that you want him to go toilet outside. If he's outside on his own and receiving no praise or rewards for going toilet out there then he's not going to learn that it's what you want him to do.

Thanks for your kindly reply. I'm taking him outside. 1 hour a day. I remember he always po on 4 pm so I took him outside for 1 hour, but he is not po. Then I go back home, he po [emoji24] . I never praise him every time he po inside the house, I also not scold him. I don't know what to say. He is my first puppy.... My friends have a lot of baby husky so I want to help to raise one of them. Never knew puppy is reallt differ with adult dog. Here is momon. he is mixed husky, I think his mom is sheepdog

I forgot to mention, I've had a dog before a puddle, passed away after 14 years. Actually she was my husband dog, but I loved her and live with her for 4 years. Died because old age. We never chained her, nevet trained her but she was really obedient. So I really eager to get a new dog even if its puppy

At 8 weeks old he shouldn't be going for walks for a hour sorry if I'm wrong about that? You need to take him out to toilet every hour and straight after eating , drinking , sleeping and playing etc , lots of praise when he does go outside too , like your baby he can't hold it in so when he's gotta go he's gotta go , and it will take a couple of months or so before he's housetrained

Hang on you're saying he's 8 weeks old but you've been toilet training him for weeks? How old was he when you got him exactly? A puppy should not leave his mother until he is 8 weeks at least.
And no I wouldn't say it's ok to leave him chained all day, puppies do take a while the toilet train and he's not going to learn anything being chained outside. Also puppies will be destructive at first, again this is something will take time to train out of. Sorry for being blunt but if you have a baby, you should have thought about these things before getting a puppy

Hi fellow husky owners,
I was wondering if there's any tricks or advice or tips I can get for potty training my puppy?[emoji4] he's about 8 weeks old and likes to pee EVERYWHERE!

Make sure you clean up the pee properly, there's a cleaner you use with a certain ingredient that takes the smell away but I can't remember what it's called! If he can smell he's peed there before he will do it again in the same spot. I didn't use puppy pads myself as I think they just confuse the situation whether they can pee inside or not! If he does have an accident or if you notice he's about to, try and stop it and take him outside and reward him for going outside. Astro had a bit of a pattern when he went after a few weeks which made it easier, so hopefully that will be the case for yours too :)

Ice wouldn't poo outside on walks either for a long time but he would happily do it in the back garden or in the house. Try to remember that he's a tiny baby still , ice was several months old by the time we finally cracked the house training it certainly was a long process of two steps forwards and two steps back.
Puppy proof your house as best you can to stop him from eating and chewing things he shouldn't. Maybe it's best to restrict access to only a few rooms initially, then you should be able to keep an eye on things and get to grips with the toilet training and prevent him eating things he shouldn't. If he goes to poo and you spot him take him outside to finish it and praise him if he does. If it's already happened just quietly clean it up and like Rachel said above me, use a cleaner designed for pet urine removal.
I can't lie to you it is going to take a while to master, particularly as he's so young still but he will learn eventually with the help of positive reinforcement and consistency.

He is been with me since we was 4 weeks. His mother sick, whats that called, parvo? So he is separated too soon, I know.

Sent from my Lenovo A7010a48 using Husky Owners mobile app

Well there is your answer, any dog who is separated from their mother too soon will be harder to train. They also won't have developed all their dog socialisation skills so make sure she is well socialised with other dogs. She will also probably have separation anxiety. You need to be patient with her, it's not her fault she was taken from her mother too soon

I never thought that would be this hard to potty train a puppy. Because I have a dog before that we have never trained but pe and po properly. Our previous dog pe and poo in the corner and always there.. and the chewing issue also a problem, I won't give up this puppy, I already attached to him, that is why I'm looking for information, then I got this apps about husky owner. Why I want to adopt a puppy and lucky he is a husky (mixed) that everyone said this is a dog that are good with babies. I really thanks you for all your reply. I also looking other thread to learn.

The issues are because she's so young, you've been trying to train a newborn baby basically. You need to bring her in the house and train her properly, every puppy will pee and poop so that's no reason to have her chained up outside away from your baby

Having the pup so young is a sad thing and yes there will be more challenges to come than just the toilet training. Bite inhibition for example will likely be poor and good dog to dog social interaction will be pretty much non existent. It's going to take a bucket load of patience, hard work and time to overcome them but if you are able to do this and willing to put the time into getting things done then you can get through it.
He definitely needs to be with you. Yes huskies can be good around children but only if they're allowed to be around them and taught how to be good. Same works the other way, it's just as important to teach children to respect dogs and treat them properly: no grabbing and tugging on them, sitting on them, pestering them when they're trying to rest etc....
Being realistic here, toilet training can in some cases take up to six months or more to master and that's when dealing with a pup that you got from 8 weeks old. Obviously this isn't the case for all, there are some who pick it up much quicker. Bear got the idea in a few days (we got her at around 12 weeks old) with just the occasional accident Maybe once a day. Within a month she was pretty good provided we didn't leave her too long before going out. Ice we got at 16 weeks and he was much slower to learn. Basically he knew that when outside he can go to the toilet but he also didn't realise fir a while that it wasn't a good idea to also go to the toilet in the house.

Basically the way to think of things is that you don't have one young child, you have two. Raising a puppy is very much like having a newborn child. Trying to juggle both your little one and the increased needs of having a younger pup together Is not an ideal situation if I'm being my honest but it is what it is. They can be raised together successfully but for a good while yet you'll be getting a few grey hairs and have days where you feel at the end of your tether. In the flip side there will also be days where you feel so proud of the little things that you all achieve. It's going to be an emotional roller coaster for sure.

I'm new here, but my puppy is fairly new to us. He's 17 weeks. We got him at 8 weeks. I agree with the others, I think it's going to be difficult for you, because yours was so young. Luckily mine picked it up very quickly. It only took about 2 weeks, with less and less accidents as you go.

You have to make sure to go out with them, to make sure that they actually go potty. Some people put the puppy out (who knows what they did out there, probably everything except go potty), then wonder why they come in and potty in the house.

I say mine is "trained", but I bring him out every two to three hours (plus after eating, drinking a lot, or playing a lot). Maybe he'd potty in the house if not, but I don't want to find out lol. It's a lot of work, but the puppy stage will be over before you know it!

  • 4 weeks later...

Thanks guys for your reply... I didn't chain him now. I ask my father to build a cage about 2*1 meter just for 2 months after he completed for vaccine, then I will let him inside the house. My house is being reconstructed so no good to keep him inside. He just got a shot today.... I don't plan to potty him outside of the house. I'm living in Indonesia so it's not be wise to let my dog poo ouside, there are so many wild dogs outside, I really scarred when some random dogs trying to attack my puppy.. I will potty train him in the house. I'm so happy when he respond me when I said 'sit' .. ^^

This is Momon when I walked with him to play with the grass.. his most body like a helder (his mom)

Hi there fellow Indonesian...

Greeting from my two precious, Queenie & Prince...image.jpg

As the poty problem, just hang in there. Withing days or sometimes weeks, your puppy will get the concept of it. Just keep on the training, and always use positive reward when he's doing good job.

Btw, as for the poty trained your dog outside.... Well, not all neighbourhood (in Indo, or even in any part of the world) welcomes dog who drops "treats" everywhere. So unless you are dicipline enough to clean up after the pup, then better use poty pad (with layers of old newspaper for the base).

Cage or crate is good to train a husky about patience, dicipline & dealing with separation anxiety. But pleaseeeee don't use it as a place for them to live day in and out. Siberian husky are breed to be an active dog. Limiting their movement on small confinement will stress them out (which may leads to agresiveness, destructive behaviour, health issues, etc).

And lastly... Keep updating yourself with this group. I've learned lots of good stuff here. And I hope you too. Hahahaha...

Regards,

Sam.

Hi Sam ! Nice advice. I made a schedule when or what time he should be inside or outside. If I can't watch him because I have something to do, I will keep him in the cage. But yes, most of his time is in the cage. And I bet his body will grow bigger and the cage is not enough. My puppy ia super active even after getting a shot (vaccine) he still run and jump so the doctor told me to keep him in the cage for 3 days and don't take him to walk. But you see, sometime I forgot and let him outsidethe cage to play and cuddle him :)
