Weak Back Legs

Hi, we have a 5 1/2 year old who we adopted when he was 4. We jave had a couple of incidents this past week that concern us. Last week my husband took Amicus for a bike ride/run (Amicus ran along side the bike). When they were almost home he started having trouble running. By the tkme they got home Amicus' back paws were bloody, most likely from dragging his paws, and his back legs were so wobbly that he could hardly stand. Then tonight they went for a hike. Amicus was amped up pulling like crazy, then suddenly he just collapsed. After about 15 minutes he was able to get up but was moving very slowly. Anyone have any ideas as to what could be going on? Hip dysplacia? Something else? This all came on so suddenly...or maybe we just didn't see the signs :-(

It could be a disc problem. Our first Husky had a slipped disc one time, and her back legs were really weak, so much so, that she could not get up without help. Took about two weeks of supporting her with a bath towel looped under her tummy until things improved.

But it could be HD or arthritis, or who knows. If it were me, I would have have him checked out by your vet. Until then, take it easy.

And another thing, WELCOME to HUSKY-OWNERS! Great to have you join us. Sorry it's because Amicus is having issues. Others will chime in and give you some other possibilities. Good luck, and please keep us updated on Amicus, because we really do care.

Thanks for all the info. Update: took Amicus to the vet. They took an xray of his back...no disc problems, hips seem fine, but there was a little dot between two vertebres that she was unsure about. They also heard something that shouldn't be there when they listened to his heart. The vet put him on pain meds and suggested we take him to a specialist. We spoke with the specialist and she recommended lots of tests starting with the heart, then muscles then spine. The problem is we are looking at 1000's of dollars, which we unfortunately don't have. They first vet said we could also just do pain meds for 10 days and slowly introduce exercise again, which we have done. Amicus seems to be fine with small walks. We are keeping our fingers crossed!

I always ask my vet if he's got a boat payment coming due when I take either of mine in for something out of the norm.  Karen, I think you are taking the reasonable approach to this, and that is how I would go as well.  As long as Amicus is comfortable, and your family is good with everything, then I would just keep a close eye and see how he progresses.  Good luck and by all means, please keep us updated.

I am not sure where you are located, but there is a card you can get in the states that is specifically for pet care that works like a credit card. It will allow you to pay your vet and make payments on it. I would ask if they accept it. I am pretty sure it was very simply called a "PetCare" card. I realize that means you'd still be paying a lot of money for treatment, but just thought it might help out if it becomes necessary. I really don't know anything about leg/hip problems, so I cannot help there but will definitely be thinking of you and Amicus and hoping for the best.

I have similar problem for my Husky. He is around 5 months old now. His trainer found that his rear legs are smaller than his front limbs. Took him to vet and started calcium medicines for him. He is very playful, Full of energy; but he does'nt jump some times and also trainer said that he is geting easily tired during his training.I am worried about him so much. What should I do?
