I can't begin to imagine the pain they're going through Although i have no idea what happened in this particular case, in general its a good idea to remember that technically any dog, no matter how much you trust them, shouldn't be left alone with a child. We call our furry babies domesticated but in all honesty that only runs so deep. At heart they will always be dogs and need to be respected and understood as such. Mind you having said that, not all humans could accurately be labelled as domesticated or even civilised, lol. Also I wonder how many of the dog bite incidents you see on tv turn out to be due to some behaviours that could have been prevented if recognised, such as food aggression, lack of socialisation, or guarding? I'm definitely not saying it's the parent's fault as obviously they weren't expecting their beloved family pet to react so violently but there must be a reason or trigger behind the actions, even if it's not an immediately obvious one. I can't in all honesty see a healthy, well rounded dog attack if it didn't feel it had to. I hope I'm not sounding too harsh. Going a bit off topic here but as a staffy owner I personally dread stories similar to these, like where a toddler went for a walk in the park and ended up getting mauled, as often it turns out to be a bully breed responsible and then there's an outcry for all bull breeds to be banned. I honestly can only think of one thing to say about this. Dog bites are not necessarily breed specific. You can remove all staffy's but dog bites will continue to happen. It will then just be blamed on another breed, then another, etc.... Human nature dictates that we need something to point the finger of blame at. It's far easier to say it's the dog's fault, then to have to look deeper and realise the truth is something quite different. I doubt you'll ever be able to prevent all dog bites but I suspect there could be significantly fewer if all people were more knowledgable about dog behaviours, particulary how to recognise and deal with them appropriately. She described it as a "big dog and white around the mouth" but added that she "didn't see anything that caught my eye to say anything had gone on". no blood stains mouth white ???? Clare70 Posted February 18, 2014 Report Share Posted February 18, 2014 I have to say I'm not a staff fan, just not my cup of tea and there are quite a few instances where attacks are due to this type of breed. the thing is it comes down to the owner not the dog, the way it's raised or not in so many cases. It must be really hard being an owner of this type of breed with so much bad press. Back to the Mal, whilst I sympathise with the parents of the baby, why oh why was the child left with a dog of any breed in the same vicinity! Val (Zebedee) Posted February 18, 2014 Report Share Posted February 18, 2014 There are a lot of different angles coming out of this story at the moment, I have read everything from the mother called at a neighbour's property to use the toilet and then said the dog had eaten her baby's head to the baby was airlifted to hospital but later died to the dog fell asleep & lay on the baby. I've also read the above stories too about the dog being caught by a neighbour & there was nothing untoward wrong in so much as no blood etc on the dog, so it's all very confusing & speculative. All I can be sure of is there is a Malamute, another dog (a terrier), 2 other children (aged 3 & 5 yrs), a mother & a poor defenceless 6 day old baby girl that has passed away somehow. I'm sure they'll report more after a post mortem but why do the media throw all sorts out in to the public domain before establishing the facts? Scaremongering? Sensationalism?? I have to agree - I'm not convinced - it is supposed to have trotted over to a neighbors house and eaten the cat food off the doorstep - not convinced!!!
