Teaching The Stack

Recommended Posts

We are going to start teaching Mishka to free stack/stack.  It is the plan to have her stack while hand feeding her for now.  But, I need to know if I am doing it correctly or not...she is 9 weeks old.  Can anyone show pics or please explain how to stack a sibe?  Yes, she will be shown.  If I would post some pics of her...anyone care to evaluate, or give opinions??  Many thanks.

I would be happy to offer an opinion on stacked photos.  Stacking while baiting is a perfect way to start, and with any form of training not to over do it or it won't be fun anymore and they will lose interest.  You want the front paws to be square under the shoulders, and the back of the rear leg to be even with the butt basically, slightly kicked out is ok just be cautious of over stretching the dog's appearance-

This is my Denali, this should give you an idea of what the end result should look like-

This is the practice stage my girls are in, if they are 'built' correctly a free stack should be easily obtained with no hand stacking needed (or very little)

The girls will be in their first show next month and these are more recent of the girls-

At 9 weeks old you can probably practice 5-10 mins a day or every other day.  Each one has a different attention span so just watch for boredom.  You'll probably have to switch bait often too to keep them from getting too bored of one treat.  Rather than worry about gaiting at this point focus on leash etiquette, gaiting will fall into place on it's own.  Handling classes are great teaching you how to handle your dog and your dog to respond to you as a handler :)
