Carting Fun!

Recommended Posts

We got a small taste of this last weekend with the Utah Paw Power and Pawsatch folks! It seems alot of folks around here run Mals on there teams too

Yeah Mals run on some teams here, but they are certainly not as fast as the Siberians are! I'm going to keep running my purebred Siberian team and keep on training for the next one! can't wait!

Though Denali is out on the injured list with a torn pad (from playing in the yard not in harness related) training must go on! Running in his place is once again Xena of Dashing Siberians. The team performed flawlessly over 6 miles, and with any luck Denali will be back in harness with his team in no time!

I will only be running my registered purebreds on my team. This way I can work on Working Dog and Sled Dog titles for them. Beyond that my big guys are old and are beyond the want to 'work' and Diamond is too broken to put in harness...The others may get a turn in recreational biking with me. For now I have to focus on training my team and integrating my friend's kennel into our work routine as we're planning on doing a combine kennel team for some pretty big races coming up in a year or so. BIG plans ahead for the dogs of Keahi!

That looks like a good fun day of work!!

In regard to the biking and carting. Just accustomed my 8month Siberian to his harness.. Wanted to start him with a weight sled.. Got the sled.. Just need pointers on some teaching advice??anything would help

At 8 months it is not advisable to start putting the pup under solo load- Your puppy is still developing structurally and can suffer irreversible damage to the growth plates if put under load.  However that does not mean all training must stop- quite the contrary!  You can still work on getting your directional commands down while on walks, which is really a must to have a good solid base in commands before hooking any dog to a bike or scooter or you just may be in for a wild ride!  Positive training is the best for this sport.

As we gear up toward fall (come on cooler weather!) we have added a new cart to our training arsenal!   This cart is heavier than the Arctis 3 wheel cart we have been running so I'll be able to safely add up to 6 more dogs (probably going to run a 6 dog team this year)- with hydraulic disc brakes front/rear, a seat for a passenger that can be removed for a dog bag, and some very nice other features!

This is the Fritz Dyck German made cart-

There should be quite a few adventures!  The girls will officially join the ranks, most likely in swing/team positions.  Mason and Denali will still take up the lead positions, and Juneau is likely retiring IF we can (possibly Dakota as well) if we can work out a the final details on a couple dogs we are looking at or a possible 'leasing' possibility from another kennel to round out the wheel positions.
