The Success of South Camp

Recommended Posts

I'm all settled at home now after getting back from South Camp this afternoon and I've been looking through at the aftermath posted on the forum so far. Most of these have focused on North Camp which was to be expected as it was bigger than our little camp, but I just wanted to post this up so we don't get glossed over too much ;)

First of all, I just want to say thank you to everyone who came along. Some people came from quite far away to get here, some tried hard to work around other commitments by only staying one or two nights, some people brought along things for the camp such as a rig, a gazebo, etc, and there was just generally a great atmosphere on the campsite all weekend with everyone happy to help everyone else and wanting to socialise. We didn't end up anywhere near as big as the North Camp, we had 15 dogs and 14 people stay or visit over the weekend, but because of that I think we were given a bonus that bigger camps don't have; a very personal, involved setting. By that, I mean every single person staying at camp could sit down in the evening around the fire and have one big conversation, if someone needed the day's plans to change a little that was quick and easy to arrange, it was hard to miss anything that went on, and if someone came up with a good idea for something to do it was easy to put into action there and then (Sunday roast FTW!). You didn't need to spend the whole weekend introducing yourself and your dogs to others because it only took a little while to do that, so you got to spend the rest of your time hanging out with your new friends. Big camps are a fantastic experience, I thoroughly enjoyed last year's October Camp because it's incredible to see so many people and huskies in one place, and it's great to get to meet so many of the forum's members, but the smaller South Camp was just as great, it was just different :D

We were incredibly lucky with the weather we had; when we arrived on Friday the field was a bit wet but it was lovely and sunny - even WARM when the sun was properly out! And this weather stayed with us all weekend  We did have one random 10 minute hail storm between bouts of sunshine but that's nothing to really complain about :P The pub we found was awesome - they offered to let ALL of us come in for our meal with our dogs  Though we stuck to the beer garden as it was far too warm in there for the huskies. The site was great too; from the moment we arrived we were made to feel so welcomed by the owner and she did so much to help us out (including donating some diesel for the fire!).

I had a blast organising this camp and am over the moon with how well it turned out (especially considering at one point it was only me and Karen going!!), and I only heard good things from the campers and day visitors so I'm really chuffed everyone else enjoyed themselves as much as I did! The general consensus at camp was that this would hopefully grow and grow every year, especially with the good reviews this year has gotten! But if it doesn't and it sticks to around the same size then that's fine as it worked well this year  So thank you to everyone who came and helped to make the first South Camp a huge success!! :cup:

Brilliant!

Have seen the pics and looks like you had a great time! That fire you had looked amazing as well! Big camps are diverse and fun but hard work (for me organising etc) Small camps are brilliant - everyone pitches in and you really get to know people and their dogs

So glad this was a huge success - roll on October 2013!!!!

That's probably a better way to put it! I was trying to think of a way of saying that without making it sound like I was trying to say this camp was better! Lol! :P

Thanks for a great weekend! Next time we will manage a few more nights rather than just 1.

Next year - more people, more dawgs & more pallets!

Thanks for all your hard work Steph in organising a great site and events.

Thanks to Karen for bumping into us and keeping the comms open.

Nanook,Tipsey-Walker and Yuki had an emotional weekend and are still napping from all the excitement.

Me and Dave had a great time meeting people who are as passionate about their dogs as we are.

We hope to be able to share knowledge and experience from the site members in the future.

:oops

No problem at all! I'm just so relieved everyone had such a great time :) Wish you could have stayed that extra night, the camp was quiet without you and the fire was pathetic without Dave! LOL!

Thanks for organising, Steph! We had a super time. ;) Best bits for me:

the location, pub walks, the company, Sunday Roast, the weather on Sunday, having a go with a rig...(note to self: must have one now!)

Worst bits: the cold during the night on Saturday, Timber popping the air bed (while we were still in bed) and Molly behaving badly. :groan:

An unfortunate bit: I think the horse poop has made Molly poorly; she hasn't stopped being sick since we got home, so I'm fasting her.

Loved seeing all the pictures and so glad everyone had a good time. 8st Timber vs Air Mattress = Timber wins. That's certainly one way of getting your humans up in the morning!!!

It wasn't so much his weight, rather his talons scratching at the airbed to get our attention. He punctured it, causing it to deflate in about 2 seconds. Here is the hole:

@Steph - do you have the photos from the awards / beauty pageant? Did I see you walking around with some certificates?

Karen took a couple of photos of people with the awards, they're in her batch on Facebook. I'm going to get her to send them to me so I can upload them here :) I only took 3 photos over the whole weekend :redface1: May as well post them here :P

That would be good for those of us who don't use FB. Was it Karen's phone that the 'judge' used for the group shots? Who won which awards?

Yeah Karen's phone was one of the two used to take the group photo and dog show photos :)

There were 6 awards handed out in the end: Mellony won Funniest Person, Dave won Fire Starter, Timber & Max won Best Escape Artists, Kiska won Wimpiest Dog, Taz won Best Guard Dog, and Floyd won Biggest Liar (for going on about those cakes he 'made but forgot to bring' :P ).

Glad to hear you all had fun. Your numbers were similar to ours in Iowa, and in year 2, it felt like we were doing it for years and knew everyone well...!!!
