I think it has to do with skin pigmentation. Like, Suka has those black spots on his skin too...not just on his gums.

I'd be interested in knowing why the vet said that ... while it might be uncommon in some breeds ( but I can't think of any off hand ) I know it's all too common in others.

Yeah, I know. Just if the vet had a particular reason for it. I think the black pigmentation helps protect against sun. Ghost has black and pink spots on his paws too and at quite a lot of places. :)
