Thistle
Sorry @tyrone&charlotte for jumping on your thread.... But we are having the same problem with Mollie. We have had her 3weeks and her stomach still hasn't settled... When we rescued her they couldn't tell us what food she was on so we just changed her food. We have her on Wagg complete worker dry mix. Iv just checked on the food advisor site Al mentioned but can't seem to find it. (not sure if this means it's really bad for her?) We have given her raw eggs in with her dinner on two occasions as I was told that it should bind her stomach...that hasn't worked either. I would like to try the chicken route but am really unsure as to how much I should give her? she is 22.5kg. And should we swap the dry mix? Thanks Amy
Mazz
If Mollie is having loose stools, here's what I would do. 1. Withhold food for 24 hours. That will give her tummy time to settle. During that time, it would be fine to give her a few spoonfuls of plain yogurt several times. 2. Start her on a mix of steamed white or brown rice and boiled skinless chicken. Cut the chicken up into chunks after its been boiled. Mix about 2/3 rice to 1/3 chicken. Plan on feeding her twice a day, or three times if it works into your schedule. About a cup per feeding. Not sure how you measure where you live. If you don't measure by cups, take a tea cup and fill it twice per feeding. 3. Get some canned plain pumpkin. Give her a couple spoonfuls between meals. 4. Follow this for two days or until the stools harden up. I would also avoid giving treats during this time. If she really, really needs treats, consider small chunks of cheddar cheese. A bit of plain yogurt is also fine. 5. After a few days, if the stools have firmed up, start mixing a bit of kibble in with the rice/chicken. About 1/4 kibble to 3/4 rice/chicken. 6. After two days, change to a 50/50 mix of kibble to rice/chicken. 7. Two more days change to 3/4 kibble to 1/4 rice/chicken. 8. Finally, all kibble. This would be an opportune time to find a good quality kibble that meets her needs and your budget. Grain-free is great, but costs more. There are some grains that Huskies tolerate. Barley, rice, oats are good grains. Corn, wheat, soy are not so good. So look for a food that is free of corn, wheat, and soy. One of the biggest causes of loose stools in Huskies, is overfeeding. So don't feed as much as indicated on the bag. Our two are adults now, and are fed one cup per meal, two meals per day. If you have any questions or concerns, post back and someone will help you out. Please, by all means, keep us posted. Good luck!
simhauu
What an amazing advice! Just to add, people add raw eggs to their dogs' diet to improve the quality of the coat. And if you're unsure about how much you should give her, remember that sometimes less is better.
Thistle
Thank you that's really helpful... Think a trip to the shops to stock up on chicken and rice is in order, and I will be doing a bit of research to find a better dry food
Thistle
@Thistle, you might want to see if you can get one of the @Tech people to split this off into a separate thread, you'll get more and better responses if they will. and ... try Dog Food Analysis or Pet Food Choice for their opinion of Wagg products in general. EDIT BY MAZZ: Good idea Al. I've gone ahead and moved it to its own thread in the food section. Thanks for the Links on dog food Al, I tried to have a quick look myself and couldn't find it It seems Wagg is a very bad choice for her to be on... There are so many choices out there so going to check what our local supermarkets stock regularly and do some research on them to find out which are better for Molls and slowly move her onto new stuff
