Blaze's bloodwork came back... :(

Recommended Posts

Well, Dr. Kersten called me today, to tell me about Blazie's bloodwork.

A quick recap, for his impending surgery we had a CBC done on him to make sure he was healthy enough for the anesthesia...he sorta is.

He has a high white bloodcell (Eosinophils cells) count, indicating he brought some creepy crawlies in his stomach with him, from the breeder. *rolls eyes*

If it's not one damn thing, it's another.

Long story short, Dr. Kersten wants $60 for a fecal and then an additional $80 for the Panacur C to come with it...Yeah, THAT was my FINAL breaking point. I told her that I, personally would handle his worms.

So, tonight, Blaze and I are going out for some Fenbendazole (Panacur-C) and I will handle it.

I am so sick of this damn vet thinking I have so much money to just throw down...FIRST, she's not willing to work with me on payment plans, and now she keeps finding all this other bullshit to add to the bill.

Glad Dr. Colmery is willing to help me, apparently the other vet only wants to bend me over and...:mouthshut: yeah, I think everyone gets the picture.

Wow. I consider my vet expensive (but I love them and buy what I can from them to support a local business) -- even so, I pay only $23 for Dakota's fecal screens.

I can't remember what I paid them for Panacur for my foster girl, but I don't think it was that much, and they gave me the tapeworm pills for her "on the house."

Some are just pricier than others, I guess. At least you have shopped around.

THANK YOU! I am SO glad to see I'm not the only one with sense here :lolman:

It's just funny because despite Dr. Kersten being a nice woman, apart from being a vet, I already told her I had bred showline Goldens in the past, she KNEW I wasn't 'the average bear' when it came to health care, so I was just kind of blown away that she'd try that with me, especially after charging me $200 the other day for bloodwork and consultation and THEN quoting me $800 for the surgery, I was like, 'really lady? You haven't charged enough yet???'

I thought it was more funny than anything, I was angry at first, then after I hung up, I just laughed.

Out of curiosity's sake, I called Dr. Baylis to find out what HE would charge. $10 for fecal and $30 for the Panacur-C. I just smiled and said, 'Alright, thanks, just checking' :)

I understand every puppy has to be wormed, he has already been wormed TWICE thus far, by the breeder, supposedly.

I was irritated at the price of it.

Also, Kristina, I noted in my post I was buying him the SAME thing, so I'm not saying he won't get wormed...

Maybe you misunderstood. In no way was I implying that you weren't getting the puppy wormed i'm just saying the fact that the puppy HAS worms isn't uncommon.

Thanks Nix, he will be. FINAL consultation (by Dr. Colmery) on this coming Monday, and then the big surgery day :)

Yes, I am SMILING about his surgery...I am HAPPY he will no longer be in pain and by doing surgery NOW we may be preventing his adult teeth from growing in like the puppy teeth did :D

Thats the good of it, poor little thing! Hug him big for all of us:doglick:

Thanks Fallon and Attila, you guys know the little devil is getting all the lovin he can stand :)

Had his first meal of Fenbendazole (Panacur C) with some Taste of the Wild moist food.

He sure seems skinny, but the worms would do it, as would switching food, as would the diherea and on and on.

If he keeps dropping weight, I'll add a little canned food to his meals. Might help.

Chicken and rice sounds like a great idea, I also know of a product that works fantastic as well, but shipping is 7 days without expediting it.

As for yogurt, though I have heard it is excellent as well, I could've swore I heard somewhere that a great deal of dogs are lactose intolerant? Not sure if it's true or not, so I just always avoided giving my fur babies dairy.

Poor Blaze!

Dogs are lactose intolerant. Since Blaze is still a puppy, only give him a little bit of yoghurt. Also you should make sure it is "live" yoghurt - although I'm not the expert on this yoghurt stuff. I'm just regurgitating what people have told me on H-O...

Also, make sure the rice is plain rice (cooked maybe too?) and cooked chicken as well as the cooked chicken is probably easier on his stomach. Make sure there aren't in bones in the chicken!

My vet does payment plans; although I have pet insurance so I haven't needed to use it that much. Is there no other vet you can find that will work with you to give payment plans? In my experience, the ones that don't give payment plans aren't as good as the vets that try to work with you.

And those prices are pretty steep - my vet charges me around $40 for an all around blood test and about $25 for the fecal test. Although, I guess she makes up for it when he gets his yearly vaccines in May (around $500 for rabies, canine distemper, canine parvo, and something else that I can't remember. But the price varies a little because the rabies vaccine lasts 3 years.)

Eponine's stools were a bit loose after her last worming...

Also when you get your pup on a heartworm preventative go with Interceptor

Sorry your having such a rough time. Also, check out your local humane society for vaccination clinics...ours does more than just vaccinations (microchipping, worming, heartworm tests, etc) for almost 1/3 of what the vet charges.

Thanks Stephanie, not a bad idea! I know the local humane society around here does free Rabies vaccs once a year :)

Elyse, actually we DID (thank heaven!) find a SPECIALIST who has agreed to do Blaze's surgery for a reduced cost.

He is doing this more of a favor to the vet who recommended me to him, but he also says that having 43 years of canine dentistry experience, and seeing as all he does is teeth, all day, every day, he is much quicker than most vets, so less anesthesia is needed, and Dr. Colmery (Blaze's new will-be surgeon) does NOT charge by the tooth for extractions, like aforementioned Dr. Kersten does.

Like I said, we go in for the 4th and HOPEFULLY (Fingers, toes, and paws crossed!) final consultation on Monday, Oct. 3rd at 9:45am. From there, with Dr. Colmery's expert opinion we will decide exactly just what surgery is needed.

Sure enough, the first round of Safe-Guard (Fenbendazole) gave Blazie the runs...As it always does with pups I've dewormed, so now he's drinking his Pedialite like a good boy and sleeping next to mommy on the couch. He's such a love bug!

Does the canned pumpkin work? I'm just asking for availability wise, because we have pumpkins this time of the year, but come winter, spring and summer, we won't and if the pumpkin works for Blaze, I'd like to have some on hand if he gets occasional spurts of runny stools.

Thanks in advance :)

Yup! plain canned pumpkin without the spices. most grocery stores sell it year round. I actually feed it to Kale as a treat every once in a while. i freeze it with his ToTW kibble mixed in. ;) when feeding it to firm up poopies only add about a tablespoon and see how it goes. I always keep about 2 cans in the house lol

I hope Blaze is feeling beter soon. When you baby does not feel well it certainly effect you as well. I know I feel that way with Rusty. Shortly after we got him he suffered anafalecic( <-SP) shock due to an allergy of some sort. I had to rush him to an emergency animal hospital in the middle of the night. His snout, throat, tounge was so swollen he could barely breath and was vomiting. The trip was about an hour and I was never so scared in my life. He was given several injections and recovered quicky. He has to take daily medicine several times a day for what we humans call seasonal allergies. I worry about him more then my 17 year old daughter sometimes.

As for the runny poos Rusty gets them every month with his hearworm meds and he gets 2 tablespoons of plain yogurt and that does him good. Of cours he is not sensitive to dairy (cheese is his fav treat). He has been given pumpkin(does not like it as much) That work good too. I just hate to see him suffer with anything.

The cost of worming is insane. My vet does it for free. Bloodwork on the other hand is pricy. We paid almost $200 for Rustys testing but that was everything for not knowing his past. Shopping around is the key. Unfortunatley some vets charge unbelievable prices thats for sure. Good for you to shop around. Just because a vet is expensive does not mean they are good. Our babies deserve the very best.
