I've asked specifically for her seeing that she has seen our pets the most and also she the sort to care about the animals she sees and not the money. When we lost Gizmo she was as gutted as we were that he didn't pull through. So fingers crossed that things will go well this afternoon. Elmo Posted July 20, 2011 Author Report Share Posted July 20, 2011 OK, well we're back from the vet. She had a look at Tallica's eyes and confirmed there was definately clouding in one of the eyes. She has given us some eye drops to see if that makes any difference and prevent inflamation in the mean time. She has referred us to their eye specialist who is in their Green Leaves surgery as she said that she hasn't got the greatest of knowledge on eye problems. Whatever it it is Agata said we have caught it extremely early and we shall know next week on the 29th if it is something that needs to be treated or just needs to be checked up on. #Dance your cares away, worries for another day!# Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

rigrunner Posted July 20, 2011 Report Share Posted July 20, 2011 You need to ensure the Vet you have been referred to is a Opthalmologist and you would probably be best getting a BVA eye test. A Siberian in the UK should be tested for Hereditary Cataracts, Predisposition to Glaucoma, PPM, and Corneal Dystrophy. These are simple test involving first looking into the eye (using specialist equipment) without eye drops, then eye drops are put in and 20 or so mins later looking in again. If you have a BVA test then the results will automatically be recorded with the Kennel Club. Unless you have fast growing cataracts (v v rare but not unheard of) it is unlikely that you will need any treatment. If you can see a clouding of the eye, in my experience it is most likely corneal dystrophy - a type of fatty deposit, often doughnut shaped. She's only 7 month old, I dont want anything horrible happening to her at such a young age... Aww, I hope when you see the vet, its not something that can't be easily corrected-and not too expensive for you. I was at home with Vix, biting my nails.... I'll go with Tallica next time so I get all the details, Ian aint good with details.. Elmo Posted July 29, 2011 Author Report Share Posted July 29, 2011 Ok Tallica is back from the vets. The eye specialist has told us that Tallica HAS got cataracts, it's in BOTH eyes. She has been hiding it very well with using her sense of small and hearing as 'she is a very intelligent dog'. They don't know what type or the extent yet as that will need further examination. The vet was very concerned about how quickly this has come on and surgury is going to happen. She has told us it's a 98% success rate, Im hoping Tallica's age and character will make that 100% Anita, the breeder has been contacted this afternoon and is shocked that this has happened to one of her pups, afterall, every one of hers is eye checked each year and has always been clear. She has one of Tallica's brothers and his health check has come back fine. The next stage is surgury. It'll be at Worthing, drop off and surgury one day, pick up the next day. Cataract surgery in humans is pretty straightforward - what do thy use for lenses in dogs, same type as in humans?? Wishing you the best of luck - success!! Elmo Posted August 1, 2011 Author Report Share Posted August 1, 2011 Just got a phone call from the Grove Lodge people, they will be getting her in for a consultation on 11th August, and that will be going through all the proper eye tests to assess the cataracts and see if she is suitable for surgury.
