Parvovirus

Recommended Posts

Hi all, cross posted this......just something to be aware of....

This morning's Veterinary Times front page headline warns of parvovirus outbreaks in the midlands (particularly Leicestershire) and the south-west (Devon & Cornwall).

Vaccinated dogs should be protected, but no vaccine is 100% effective.

Early symptoms are depression, loss of appetite, vomiting, high fever, and severe diarrhoea. Faeces can be either greyish or fluid and bloody. Rapid dehydration is a great danger.

The second form of canine parvovirus is cardiac syndrome, or myocarditis, which can affect puppies under three months old. There is no diarrhoea because the virus multiplies rapidly in muscle cells of the immature heart. Puppies may stop suckling and then collapse and die within minutes or days. No effective treatment is available for cardiac syndrome, and surviving puppies may have permanently damaged hearts.

Please be aware of this as we may be able to save lives with the correct advice - which is seek immediate veterinary attention if parvo is suspected or a dog or puppy shows any of the symptoms described.
