Training Your Dog for Canix No matter how fit they may look, you cannot assume that pet dogs are up to long distances. As well as the risks from heat and accidental over-exertion, there is a third danger: that of deliberately imposing demands on dogs that can kill them or permanently damage their health. I advise you to build your dogs distance up over several weeks/months. During training runs and hot weather (over 16°c) some breeds (ie those with short muzzles) may have difficulty cooling themselves. If your dog is overweight, unfit, not used to exercise, recovering from illness, of advancing years, or you have any doubt about …

For those who do not know already, I am about to be a proud owner of a Sibe. I just have to wait till May 15 to pick her up. I have read that Sibe are escape artist. This kind of scares me because my back yard wall is not high enough IMOP. My walls are 4 and half feet. My Stitch (english bulldog) is mainly outside during the day and sleeps in the house at night. Stitch roams around the back yard all day without and chain or leash attached to her. I want to be able to let my new Sibe to have the same kind of life style at Stitch but I am afraid that the Sibe will jump over the walls. My next door neighbor has a Chihuahua and it running around …

hey all, i need a little help, and im not afraid to admit it as most of you know echo is our rescue gsd and we have transformed from the wreck she was to a mildy pschotic dog lol however she has developed and obsession with her squeaky tennis balls, she must have hold of it at all times and will stress when it is out of reach. we took her out for a ball throw/run with koda today and as my dad took the ball from her so i could attach her halti, she squirmed and growled and lunged to get the ball, and was trying to wrench it from the ball launcher in my dads hand. we have never seen her react this violently and dont know what to do, sh…

What age do dogs normally go through their teenage stage?? Kira's never really been a handful (I know lucky me), I mean, she was as difficult as any pup, took a while to housetrain but that was the only real problem, along with escaping. Since we've moved she's stopped escaping, because she's never left unattended, because the fence here is crap. Her recall is ok now, she'll come 80% of the time She walks lovely, on a loose lead, but does still pull towards other dogs, cats, pidgeons etc lol She sits before we open the doors, and before her dinner, and will do a sit/down stay if told (tho we still cant leave the roo…

Polar was a puller when I first got her at around 4 months, so I spent a long time training her to walk nicely on a leash. She walks really nice on a leash now, she can even "heel" pass some distraction sometimes (although reluctantly). When she's around 7-month old, I got her a regular walking harness and started jogging with her. When I jog with her, I let her run in the front and train her to understand "gee, haw, whoa" and such. I never let her pull too much in the lead, because she's still young, when she runs fast I run fast, so there's never too much tension in the bungee leash. Now at 9-month old, she doesn't like to run in the lead anymore. She seems very conten…

I'm having a little dog training emergency. With the opening of our guesthouse, many guests have stayed and gone. Polar has been a sweetheart in greeting every one of our guests, and many of them love her. Some of them love her so much, they also give her a lot of snacks, just whatever they're eating. I never feed Polar food off my table or plate, so she never begged for food, but she's doing it now. But that's not even my biggest concern, the problem is a lot of those guests don't know dogs, they don't know what a dog can and cannot eat, they figure what's ok for humans are ok for dogs... but that can be deadly wrong. When a large group of university students were stayin…

We have been having a problem over the past two weeks with Ozzy. Every time someone comes to the house he jumps up onto them, and today Micah did the same. When we got Ozzy we trained him not to jump up by turning our back on him and ignoring him when we entered the house. But for some reason, he has now decided that he wants to do the meet and greet 'his way'. It must be very daunting to visitors to have Ozzy standing up against them with his paws on their shoulders. Over the weekend he even jumped up onto the couch and sat on my daughter's lap - in one jump, no sneaking up on her or anything, just jumped and sat as if it was the most natural thing…

Lately Pongo has decided that he wants to freak out when we're on a walk. What he does instead of listening when we say sit is jump up on us, bit the leash, bite us and refuse to listen. It usually only lasts a few minutes and then he calms down. Today, however, he would not pull out of it and we only made it 4 houses down the street. So I had to drag him back to the house with him jumping around like a maniac and take him inside. The only thing that seems to work is making him lay down on his back in a submissive position. Is it possible he's pushing things to try to take charge? I don't understand why all of a sudden he is doing this, he's normally so well-behaved! We d…

I have also small stones which the housing put there when the houses were built an he even eats these. He has his toys at the back but the minute i turn away he is away eating at the grass again. I am also trying to toilet train him to go outside any tips on this too much appreciated.

Ok guys our pup(13weeks) is getting the hint on not nipping. We are coming along there. HOWEVER.... She is going after my 10 month out of no where. It was every now and then she would "grab" him by the leg. I correct her every time. I have tried noise diversion, the ceaser method, crating, and redirecting over the last few weeks. about 4 days of each being consistent. It is just getting worse. It has gotten from every now and then... then to everyday... and today she got him twice and once in the face. Not to brake skin but enough to leave a mark and bruises. I never leave them unattened. It happens when my little guy is playing nicely by himself or watching ca…

Hello all, Its been a while since we have posted on here but I had a quick question. Missy is crate trained and when she whines or needs to go potty I take her outside directly from her crate. I think she has caught onto this and whenever I tell her to "come" she won't. She will just stay there and wait and wait and wait. I think she has associated me calling her to going outside. Funny thing is when my wife calls her she will run out of the crate down the hall and right into one of the other rooms. Maybe its an estrogen connection that her and I don't have but I'd like for her to be a bit more receptive to me when I call her .

Hi My 16week husky continues to bite us, I always say no and ignore him when he has biten one of us, but he is still not learning. He bites when playing which we tell off for but I thought thats his way of playing but in the last few day he has started biting my kids hands when they have food. This morning my two year had a chocolate bar and he bite her hand and held on until she gave him the bar. I told him no and send him to bed. I am doing the right thing he is off to training on tuesday but what should I do in the mean time. I don't like him stealing food let alone biting us to get it. He also keeps going to the toilet in the house how can I stop…

OK don't know if im in the right area hope i am right here goes im giving in and going for the crate training but would love some helpful tips which i know u are all great at giving. ive found a extra large crate on Amazon for Sasha which is winging its way to us as i speak but the final straw came on Saturday when i came back and found that she had chewed the child lock off the fridge and got in she managed to drag out 5 of the 6 eggs that were in there. she regretted it once it was making its way though her system but came to realise that if she hasn't stopped with the chewing and naughty behaviour than we would cave in and do the crate whilst we are out. als…

Wasn't sure where to post this but just wanted to share it with all of you. I am pretty chuffed with it! I decided to train my youngest dog to do the scent discrimination exercise this week. This is an exercise required at the highest level of obedience competition (UD) - I don't know if we will ever compete at that level but it is fun to teach some of the more advanced exercises! The basic premise of the exercise is that the dog learns to retrieve an object that has your scent on it. You have identical pieces of metal, wood and leather (they are number so you can tell them apart) and you lay all but one of each out on the ground with a pair of tongs…

Well we really love walking with the walking belt and have actually been enjoying it. I keep wondering why I never seem to pass anyone on the walks though. I am truly wondering if people see us coming and duck behind the bushes. I have been taking my camera the last few times and I never see anyone that i can ask to take a picture. Thats just not fair, Im moving to the UK and getting a house near Sarah so she can take pics of me, the boys, and our unusual rig...hahahahaha. The boys always look so happy I just want one good pic, lol.

So over the past few months I have been doing training with Gizmo and people, hoping that he would calm down and settle with them and not continually growl at them. He started to become alot more calm and relaxed and I was able to allow people to actually pet him. It was brilliant to see Gizmo starting to relax around people and a really confidence boost for me as well BUT...... It didn't last very long Just the other day I was stood talking anoth dog owner in the park and I had Gizmo calmly sat by me. I was talking to her about the training I am doing with Gizmo for a while and before we carried on she asked if she could pet him. As his…

Hi guys, Quick question regarding how you carry your rig if you don't have a trailer or large van? I have a Chrysler Grand Voyager (middle seats removed so dogs have plenty room in the back. I have roof rails but thought a bike rack on the back would be better/safer. What are your experiences and where did you buy the rack/holder from? Thanks, Kelly
