[Raw Feeding Threads #1-5 Merged by SolitaryHowl] [Original threads created by Sid_Wolf] ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Raw vs BARF... Whats the difference? There are 2 variations of raw feeding, BARF and true Raw, both are similar but have a few differences. BARF can stand for 2 things, depending on who your talking to, some say it stands for Bones And Raw Food, others say it stands for Biologically Appropriate Raw Food, both are correct. BARF involves feeding raw meat and bones, along with a mix of fruit and vegetables, and various suppliments, this is because BARF works on the idea of dogs being omnivores, and th…

Okay, ive seen a few qs on feeding amounts for puppies, teens and even adults SO i thought it was long overdue to set some guidelines for new and just slightly confused Husky owners;) We could make it a sticky in the food and diet section so new members can find it easily:) The main rule here is that no guideline is concrete, all sibes are different, some come from different lines and all sibes are individuals, but by other owners putting their daily amounts it may prove some help. We'll start with puppies, 7weeks When i got Alaska i fed her 3 times a day, 3 non heaped handfuls of kibble in warm water. Sorry i cant give the e…

If you've noticed your dog has been having trouble walking, going up stairs, getting up, or with general movement...it is possible your dog has issues with his joints - especially if he is older. Unfortunately, it is not uncommon to hear of a dog as young as 5 years old begin to develop arthritis, or other joint problems. This is due to a variety of factors, including but not limited to: - Poor breeding/genetics - Poor upbringing - the puppy was exercised too much at a young age. (The general rule is +5 minutes to each walk per month of age. Up until their joints stop growing - around 14-16 months) - Injury (or ligament tear) at a young age. - Overweight/Obesity (ca…

About two years ago I had Shayne at a park hiking when I was approached by a woman and her lab. As she approached I began shoveling food in Shayne’s face to keep her from being too concerned about the lab. Out of absolutely nowhere, this woman began yelling at me and berating me about starving Shayne (yeah, I know, ironic since I was shoveling hot dogs in her face). She threatened to call the humane society and report me for abuse/neglect. Pointing toward Shayne, she said, “She is absolutely too skinny! You can see all her muscles … she’s all skin and bone!†The kicker? She had a show-line lab who was … well, rather rotund. Okay, that’s a really nice …

Do you have any old remedies/tips if so addthem here 1) Bran, fuller's earth, french chalk and talcum powder = All these will absorb grit and dirt from fur, in the same way that shampoo cleans hair. Shake on to the area leave for a while to obsorb, brush out gently but thoroughly. 2) Salt = This will absorb urine, pour a generous amount on to carpet, leave for a few hoursto soak up the liquid. Then vacuum. 3) Many dogs have cracked and dry paws. An effective low cost treatment is to apply petroleum jelly or Vaseline to its paws. Apply daily for two to five days and the cracked and dry paws will smoothen out. As the cracked paws heel,…

Aurora had an episode of reverse sneezing last night, if you dont know what it is its pretty distressing for you as it seems like the dogs choking. I thought id do a what is it and how to treat it thread. Reverse Sneezing (Pharyngeal Gag Reflex) Authored by: Becky Lundgren, DVM Reverse sneezing is a disconcerting event in which a dog makes unpleasant respiratory sounds that sound like it is dying -- or will die in the next few minutes. Reverse sneezing sounds similar to the honking noise made by a dog with a collapsing trachea, but reverse sneezing is a far simpler condition that usually does not need any treatment. It is called reverse sneezing because it sounds …

yep you read that right is is a reminder to everybody (hopefully lol) to always....... watch your sibes when eating im posting this because of my little scare last night when feeding kira some more of her pig head (she clearly hadnt eaten enough and was hungry again by the time we got home). We were out in the garden and while she was eating she got a bit stuck in her throat, the signs were: kind of gagging but not as bad as when shes gunna be sick, moving her head back and forth, trying to chew something which wasnt there, and stopping eating. I put my had down her throat and tried to get it but couldnt, so i started smacking her (rather hard actual…

Healthy Food suppliments For Huskies and Malamutes. When I was 10 my parents selected their first breeding pair of Siberian Huskies. Over the last 17 years I have come to really love this breed. I prefer them as family dogs over evey other, despite their size and their many naughty habits...lol. My least favorite issue with huskies is that some eat very well and will take any food you put down for them (when I was 3 we owned a husky who would literally eat mud pies...LOL) and then some of them are such choosy eaters that in order to ensure good health and growth in the first years of their lives you must find a way to add something both nutritious a…

Dog Heatstroke Survival Guide Know how to treat and prevent this dangerous condition. What is heatstroke? In simple terms, heatstroke occurs when a dog loses its natural ability to regulate its body temperature. Dogs dont sweat all over their bodies the way humans do. Canine body temperature is primarily regulated through respiration (i.e., panting). If a dogs respiratory tract cannot evacuate heat quickly enough, heatstroke can occur. To know whether or not your dog is suffering from heatstroke (as opposed to merely heat exposure), its important to know the signs of heatstroke. A dogs normal resting temperature is about 100.5 to…

Hi Everyone! Though I'm not feeling great today I've been promising Sarah I'd make her some new cookies and since not moving, while tempting, makes everything worse I decided to get to it. There are a lot of questions that come up regarding what to feed, how much to feed, when to feed, leave it out for them, pick it up after so many minutes; and the list goes on. So here's my take on dog food and feeding my dogs. People have a tendency to get hung up on buzz words. "Holistic", "organic", "natural" are three that come to mind. Then there are those same buzz words with "ultra" placed in front of them. "Grain-free" has also become somewhat of a buzz word, only because it is used so frequently. The more a word is used within a language, it often times begins to loose its distinctiveness. But I digress. I have fed my dogs Nutro Ultra Puppy, Diamond Nat…

I have seen many health questions asked on here and a lot of the answers involve apple cider vinegar. I thought I'd look into this more as to what properties it actually has and what health issues it can help with, I was surprised what I found it covered. Here's a starter, but if you have used it for other things, let us know here. Also tell us whether it helped or not http://m.wikihow.com/Use-Apple-Cider-Vinegar-for-Dogs

Hello all. I've been debating this issue forever... I would like input on how you feed your husky. Puppy or adult. What I'd like to know, is how many cups of dry food you feed per day? 7 months and up. Please add age and quantity! Thank you all

I am kind of concerned about my Husky. She is very very skinny. I get comments all of the time about how skinny she is, and was wondering if there is any way I could put a little weight on her. Her birthday is 5/26/11. I think she could use a couple pounds myself. Other than her being skinny she is very healthy. I haven't gotten a weight in a while on her. She is purebred, but also seems to be VERY tall. She towers almost all females at the park. And some males. I will post a few pictures. Sorry if they are blurry. She did not want to sit still long enough.

sort of a stupid question but i was doing some research about frontline plus and some people said you cant sleep/kiss/hug your dog as much if you apply frontline plus because it can affect you too. Just wondering whats the opinion from you guys. I also just bathe my dog been ~24 hrs can i apply frontline plus now? Its because sometimes my dog hops up on my bed and takes a nap there. Also alot of small kids tend to pet my dog alot. how is frontline plus different from the seresto pet collar? if lets say the dog sleeps on my bed with the collar and etc.

Hi all, My 10 month old boy Shadow has the funniest looking legs. When standing or sitting, his paws seem to angle outwards. This is the same on the front and back legs, although the front legs are worse. Could this be a genetic problem? We got him from a backyard breeder so obviously his parents hips wouldn't have been tested. Or is it something we are doing wrong and could fix? We have never over exercised him and he is not overweight. We've noticed he does it more when he's inside as we have polished timber floors and they are quite slippery. Could this be the problem? He also prances when he runs. When we take him to the dog park we have notice…

Has anyone's huskies had problems after eating a Whimzees all-natural, gluten-free dental chew? I found these at a privately owned pet store and was on sale! I heard about greenies and wanted to stay away from them so I thought I'd give Whimzees a try. I gave Gumi, my precious husky, the medium alligator veggie chew and immediately after she got sick the next 24-hours. It's been 3 weeks now where she has been losing her appetite, vommitting, and having diarrhea. I've taken her to the vet many times and emergency once. Right now she is doing fluid therapy daily for about a week and on pain medication and antibiotics. I've spent so much money, close to $1000 now, and I'…

Hi there, My husky is 15 months old. She looks very healthy and behaves completely normal, except for one problem, she's panting all day long. As soon as she wakes up, she starts panting and until she goes to bed, she won't stop. We live in Texas, a pretty warm place however we have air conditioner and she pants even when she's in an air conditioned place. Sometimes she lays right under the air conditioner with cold air blowing at her and she's still panting. Even while I'm giving her a cold bath, she's still panting. I thought panting meant they are too hot but she's panting even when she's not too hot. Here is my observation of her: 1. She makes no noise…

Our new husky is 10 wks old. We washed him twice last week using no more tears shampoo. We just bought some special dog shampoo. 1. How often should you wash a husky puppy? 2. Our Husky has dry skin in some areas. Can anyone recommend a shampoo for dry skin? Thanks.
