I am having a bunch of problems with Abu. 1. I let him have the basement during the day. Although he does not go to the bathroom in his crate he does go int he basement. Should I keep him in the crate all the time he is not with me? is there a way to make sure he does not go to the bathroom downstairs? 2. He is not learning commands very well. Is he supposed to know his name at 11 weeks? Or is it okay for him not to know his name? I think he knows the sit command but he is very inconsistent. He never comes to me when I call him over either. I am so lost at what to do. =\

:g_sad: Eika is pulling really REALLY badly at the moment...especially when we see someone out on the walk or another dog. She pulled me out my chair this morning, luckily someone else was there and he held her whilst i climbed back in. We have her on a harness, and i want to try her on a collar, but both myself and Mike don't trust them. I suppose i'm not really doing anything to correct her behaviour as she really doesn't listen to me. Well she will for about a second, when i stop and pull her next to me, then i push off and say heel and she just bolts past me...i feel like i'm doing this and constantly with her on a walk. Do you thi…

It is mentioned in the history of the Siberian Husky that they were not just used to pull chukchis and their daily catch along with the sled but they were alos used to herd mammals such as deer/elk also as the chukchi used these animals coats for clothes/warmth and most likely food. So my next question for you all to discuss is do you think the sibe still holds the skills required to be a hearding dog with the appropriate training? Do you think they still hold that herding instinct like they do with the harness working (sled pulling) instinct? IMO I dont think that they sibes hold the herding instinct as much as they do with the sled pulling instinct…

Quick question for you all to discuss Do you think that the pulling of sleds/rigs/scooters/etc is like a second nature to all sibes or just a select few that come from working lines? I think with sibes from a continuous working line yes it is just like a second nature to them but I also that all sibes still have that one memory of running accross the different terrains with the chukchi people carrying sleds and the catch of the day.

So, Finn, being the character she is, has developed a new habit. She used to dig in her water bowl when she wanted more water, so I swapped her out to a bowl that had a rubber base and was a little bigger so that she couldn't knock it over, and started giving her a little more free-range on water, but then I noticed my kitchen floor is always soaked. So, I hid around the corner and watched her after I gave her water yesterday, and she is DIGGING in her water bowl. If I say no, she won't drink any more for hours, and if I ignore it, she keeps digging. She doesn't think I'm watching her, so I just don't get it. Anyone have any suggestion…

I was nosing around on yahoo answers before I was going to come on here during my inbetween time with the housework As I was browing around minding my own business I found this question which REALLY made my blood boil!! I really couldnt understand why they think mixing a breed with a different mixed breed makes a dog healthier than a pedigree when they obviously have no idea what they are doing!!! What are your views on this (I can probs guess though ) Here is the link to the question: http://uk.answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=Ago6aRnrwFq25TFhok2d8u4gBgx.;_ylv=3?qid=20090524225142AABuunV&show=7#profile-info-Rrc1V9TPa…

Just thought I would share this with you. The lunge line is stronger than most dog training leads and if you can get to a tack shop you can normally get it cut to the size you want. We got one from our local tack store 20m long and cant fault it. http://www.thesaddleryshop.co.uk/P/Roma_Cotton_Lunge_Rein-(803).aspx

We really would love to train Suka to pull, and we have been looking at the racing harnesses, my question is, at what age should we buy one to start training him in it. Obviously he will grow out of it quite fast at the moment as he is only 6 1/2 mths old, but we were told it is best to get him used to feeling a 'weight' behind him around about now so he learns how to pull it. Also regarding the turning commands and teaching him them, what tone of voice do you use, do you shout the commands out to teach them or use the 'nice' voice whilst walking them about so they learn it that way? I can't think how best to put that question lol. We are also getti…

where do your dogs sleep outside? Ice will be 16 weeks on wednesday and she has always slept in a large cupboard under the stairs with her crate in there and has always been fine with it but for the past week every time we have put her in there she has cried and scratched at the door and wanted to be outside. the only place at the minute that is under cover is a gennel down the side of the house, is this good enough for her to sleep in? their is a gate on one side of it that leads to the front of the house but the other end their is nothing, also i get very worried about her getting stolen as we live in quite a bad area :-( does anyone have any advice please

WooHoo!!!! It's finally arrived!!!! My Walking Belt which I have been anxiously waiting to arrive for a long time now. I ordered mine from Kisi Canine Accessories and it was a bit late due to the lady having problems with her machine and also some sad news about on of her dogs  As soon as it arrived I had to try it on and within minutes I was out taking Gizmo for a walk to try it out The walk was great and the elastic on the belt takes most of the jolts and pulls and with just Gizmo it felt like he wasnt on the lead, even though he was. The only jolts I felt with Gizmo was when we saw a small deer in the trees and he lunged forwards but that was it. Was a…

Just a few things to consider before you rush off to get that cute puppy. They Can and WILL if allowed to become bored or lonely, destroy a sofa, carpet or cupboard in minutes. they will strip paper and plaster off your walls and make short work of skirting boards. They might also do it because your back is turned. This habit is not restricted to puppies as grown dogs will also do this. they may even do it just because you are 'not looking'. This can be combated by providing tough toys, chews, bones etc. We have found bitters spray and vicks vaporub to be good chew deterrents. They have no respect for flora and fauna and will happily turn your …

This q was kinda for the raw/semi raw feeders out there, we feed kibble at luchtime and raw at dinner time, but we are running out of places to feed the raw, we have stone flaw in the hallway so we would feed them there and then detol the floor >>> but we would find ourself mopping the floor every other day, so then we did the front garden >> but this scared the nieghbours to the point where one woman passed by said she was going to call the rspca as she thought balto and alaska were wolfs feeding on a dead cat....... lol so we thought maybe the back garden >> although it's mostly grass and their food may get a bit dirty:rolleyes: >>> so when…

When I mention to people that I am getting a husky, the first thing they often say is 'It will kill your cats!!" Now, there was the same reaction to our getting a German Shepherd, but Tanner has been wonderful with our cats since we taught him from the beginning that cats are NOT toys. Our youngest cat, Hudson, and Tanner are actually good friends, lol - they sleep together! Got Hudson as a kitten when Tanner was about a year old, so we had a good introduction that way. However (and I know all dogs are different), how concerned should I be with a husky and my cats? Since Sasha is a puppy and since Tanner is good with the cats, I am hoping Sasha le…

Basically next year we were considering buying another sibe puppy, by then our sibes will be 2 years, trained and somewhat matured and settled. We really liked this breeders and their in essex and have offered for us to come down and meet their dogs. They are KC but do not disagree with breeding with a non KC sibe, for example they said if Alaska had her hip and eye score done and she got low scores they would offer a stud service >>> we don't know if we are going to breed Alaska and keep one of her puppies or just go to a breeder and buy one... but all their dogs are hip and eye tested and are kc, and are well looked after... what do you think of them: …

Sounds a daft question I know but, Smithy has never been a lap dog right from pup kept wanting him to come up and give us a cuddle but alas, no, it's not in him and he never has. Last night however, I was talking to the neighbour outside and fussing her Collie dog (really affectionate dog), Smithy was watching all this from inside, anyways I go in the house, sit on the sofa, and bang straight up, mush in lap as if to say "you're mine"and stayed there for at least 20 minutes. So just wondering if your dogs show any signs of jealousy?

I love travelling and sightseeing. Now i have the committment of the 2 huskies it reduces the opportunity to travel abroad - I have done some reading into pet passports and taking to the EU - has anybody experienced this? Id love to go to the norwegian mountain ranges, french alps etc wityh the dogs - but id hate them to go into quarantine. Ive heard from various sources that as long as they are vaccinated and have a "tracker" they are fine to leave and enter the UK as long as they havent been into a country where rabies is present? Has anyone taken their dogs abroad with them?

Hi all, I have a strange problem (probably not too un common id imagine) - basically no matter what i do I cannot get both of my huskies to listen to me when they see another dog, particularly smaller dogs like yorkshire terriers etc. I thought to myself maybe they get so excited because they want to play and interact (as they are still pups 12 months). Sometimes it gets to the point that they refuse to walk forwards and i have to drag them at least 50-100m a drift (practically) out of site before they continue to walk. I attended the first meeting last month and they were not too bad at all (perhaps because they were allowed to "socialise) …
